MBA Expands Creative Cake Decorating Contest
The Competitive Cake Decorating Contest at the Upper Midwest Bakery convention on February 19-20 will be expanded this year to 6 contestants. The winner of the contest will represent Minnesota in the national competition in Chicago in April. Last year's national competition in Orlando awarded over $30,000 in prize money to contestants and their bakeries. Decorators will compete in three categories at the state level including wedding cakes, sculpted cakes and floral designs. They must also be prepared to compete in fondant and seasonal design categories at the national competition.
Another new feature this year will be that contestants will be allowed to set up information marketing their bakery in front of their contest site. The contest will again be held in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency and marketed to the public so bakeries can use this as a marketing tool.
Contestants will compete during a three hour period on Saturday with the winner to be announced at the banquet on Saturday night. To be eligible to compete the decorator must have four years of professional cake decorating experience, submit a portfolio of their work and be employed by a bakery that is a MBA/RBA member. Registration materials are available on the MBA website and must be returned by January 15, 2005 with contestants notified by January 25.
