Upper Midwest Bakery Association Convention
Annual Convention 2012

UMBA 2012 Convention REFRESHED participants with new energy and insights on excellence in the baking industry. Over 600 people attended the two day event February 25 – 26 at Treasure Island Resort and Casino, Red Wing, Minnesota. Participants came from the wider Midwest region including the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. There was a wide spectrum of interests represented; educational institutions – students – instructors – food service providers, wide variety of bakeries; retail – in store – wholesale – one item shops – deli’s/cafes – manufacturing plants and potential providers. Cake and bread shops were well represented.

Vendors from all facets of the industry were represented: attire, educational institutions, bakery suppliers, cake decorating suppliers, publications, fine chocolates, beverage providers, equipment suppliers, packaging, baking molds, and a variety of other bakery needs

Thirteen Educational Sessions covered: decorating principles, baking techniques, social media, legal issues, merchandising, and special issues: sugar show pieces, bowl costing and gluten free baking.

Contests are a major attraction at the UMBA convention. Three contests were a part of the convention: Deco Cake/Sugar Arts Competition, Baked Foods Competition, and Expo Challenge Competition. The display area was completely filled.

The banquet was more than filled. Over 300 people were present with anticipation of who would win the awards to be presented and who would win one of the four 42” TV sets that were given out as door prizes. Three Hall of Fame inductees were announced. The annual scholarship was presented…. And the TV’s were gladly accepted.

Other features included bowling from 9:00 PM until the evening was complete. Sunday morning there was a brunch on the show floor and a “Buyer’s Fair.”

On to next year’s bigger and better show!
