Bakery of the Month – Roseville Bakery

We are proud to announce that the Roseville Bakery has been chosen as the winner of the bakery of the month in the Upper Midwest. The Roseville Bakery is located in Roseville, Minnesota which is a small suburb of St. Paul. It is a family owned and operated hometown bakery with a “local” feel. The bakery has been open since the 1950’s and has a very interesting history.

In 1958, the Roseville Center was built. The only two original tenants of the property who still remain to this day are the Roseville Bakery and the House of Wong. Prior to the construction of the strip mall, the space was occupied by a vegetable/fruit stand and a flower mart, which was owned by the Margolis Brothers. When the strip mall was constructed in 1958, Roger Hess opened the Roseville Bakery and remained the owner for approximately two years. After two years under his ownership, he sold to the Hackel family who owned and operated the Roseville Bakery for approximately twenty-six years. Pearl and John Hackel ran the business for many years, before turning it over to their daughter Diane and her husband.

When the Hackels made the decision to sell in 1986, the Roseville Bakery was purchased by Lawrence Holleran, a would be bookstore owner. Lawrence owned the bakery for approximately five years, before selling to Harold Haugen in 1992. Harold owned the Bakery for approximately 6 years before selling to his daughter-in-law, Mariah Haugen and her business partner Beverly Gill. Mariah and Bev made a number of improvements to the Roseville Bakery and drastically increased business before making the decision to sell in the fall of 2005.

On October 1, 2005, the Roseville Bakery was purchased by RARE Mgmt, LLC, which was owned by business partners Amy Ament (pictured above) and Reene Jacobson. In December 0f 2008, Amy Ament purchased all of the ownership shares held by Reene Jacobson. It was at this point, the Roseville Bakery once again became a single owned family business. Amy is currently operating the bakery with the assistance of her mother, Kathy. Amy does whatever is needed at the bakery, but most specifically does the wedding cake coordination and decorating and the accounting. Amy is active in the bakery community and is currently serving on the Board of Directors for both the Upper Midwest Bakery Association and the Retail Bakers of America. Amy is also active in the community and does all that she can for the community with regards to the bakery.

Currently if you look around in the bakery, you will find the walls covered in pink paper ribbons in support of breast cancer. Amy and a couple of her friends walk each year in the Susan G. Komen 60 mile walk for the cure. In addition, the bakery donates baked goods to as many local events and charities as possible. When not working, Amy enjoys spending time with her fiancé, family and friends. Family has always been important to the Aments, especially in the last few years when her father was ill. It was a difficult loss, however has created a positive in the family. With the loss of her father in December of 2010, Amy has gained a helper at the bakery in her mom. Kathy has been known to help wherever and whenever needed at the bakery. It is only recently, that the bakery has gained an additional family member in Amy’s nephew Tom. Tom started in the dishroom and is now learning the art of baking on the job.

In addition to family, the Roseville Bakery currently employes between 15 and 20 employees depending on the season. Specializing in made fresh daily, danish, donuts, breads, buns, cake, cookies, bars, and much more, the Roseville Bakery has become a destination for the residents of Roseville and the surrounding metro areas.
